A Sense of Soap: Behind our Shampoo

A Sense of Soap: Behind our Shampoo

Why Our Shampoo Isn’t 100% Natural

At Earthoskin, we started with soap — simple, natural, rooted in tradition. So when it came to making shampoo, it felt natural (no pun intended) to ask: should it be fully natural too?

The honest answer is: not quite. We love natural ingredients, but a 100% natural shampoo doesn’t always feel great to use. It can leave hair feeling heavy, waxy, or tangled. And while that might have worked in another time, today most of us have come to enjoy something different: a wash that feels light, clean, and soft. Not an absolute need — more like a modern comfort we’ve grown to look for in our daily routines.

What We Kept

Our shampoo still carries a lot of what we love from nature — ingredients that actually do something for your hair and scalp.

  1. Argan oil: Helps smooth frizz and adds natural shine without weighing hair down.
  2. Avocado oil: Rich in nutrients that support hair strength and softness.
  3. Coconut oil: A lightweight hydrator that helps lock in moisture.
  4. Olive oil: Gentle and conditioning, keeping hair manageable and less prone to dryness.

For the sensory part, we blended rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood oils — not just for fragrance, but for a calm, grounded presence that makes your everyday routine feel a little more intentional.

What We Left Out

  • Harsh sulfates: We don’t use SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), a harsh cleanser that strips the scalp. Instead, we chose SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), a gentler alternative that still cleans effectively without leaving hair dry.
  • Trendy fillers: Some shampoos get crowded with exotic extracts or oils in tiny amounts — more for the label than for your hair. We kept things simpler, so every ingredient has a purpose.
  • Overloaded skincare actives: Strong actives (like acids or retinol) can be great on your face — but in shampoo, they often don’t get the chance to work. We didn’t see the need to turn your wash into a mini 10-step skincare routine.

So, is it natural?

Not entirely. But it is gentle, skin-friendly, and made with care. To us, that feels more honest than chasing perfection or trends.

At the end of the day, shampoo should do two things well: keep your hair clean and leave it feeling good. Ours does that — light, soft, and fresh, without the heavy coatings of commercial formulas. It also means you know what’s touching your skin is safe, and that you’re making a choice that’s a little kinder to the environment too.

You can expect a fragrance that feels real — fresh, calming, and a little earthy — rather than overpowering. And because we left out heavy silicones, your hair may not feel “slippery-smooth,” but it will feel naturally soft and manageable. If you have a sensitive scalp, this balance of gentle cleansing and nourishing oils helps keep it comfortable. And if you want extra slip or detangling, that’s where a conditioner comes in. (We made ours to pair with this, though any gentle one will do.)

So while it isn’t 100% natural, it’s an honest choice: a gentle shampoo that cares for your scalp, feels good to use, and makes sense for how we live (and wash) today.
